Munich Re has appointed Linus Phoon as chief executive of its Singapore branch.
Phoon, who left Canopius last year after being head of reinsurance Asia since 2008, becomes responsible for overseeing Munich Re’s businesses in Singapore and the South East Asia and replaces Till Bohmer who is returning to Munich to take on a new role in head office.
Phoon (pictured) started on May 2 and will report to Roland Eckl, chief executive, Asia Pacific – Japan, India, Korea and South East Asia.
“We are pleased to welcome [Phoon] to this new leadership role,” said Roland Eckl, chief executive, Asia Pacific – Japan, India, Korea and South East Asia, Munich Re.
“His deep reinsurance expertise and experience of managing operations and client relationships across the Asia region are important assets that will help us grow our business in South East Asia, and continue to partner with our clients across the industry.”
Phoon has more than 20 years of reinsurance experience gained at leading reinsurance firms including General and Cologne Re, St Paul Re and Converium, where he was responsible for underwriting and overseeing non-life reinsurance businesses across various Asian markets.
In January, Nattakorn Wattanaumphaipong joined Canopius from Swiss Re as head of reinsurance Asia Pacific. He works from the Singapore office and reports to Jamie Wakeling, Canopius’ chief underwriting officer for reinsurance, who is based in London.
