AIA Singapore appoints head of ESG

AIA Singapore has appointed former United Oversea Bank (UOB) corporate sustainability head Leong Li Sun as head of environmental, social and governance (ESG), according to a company announcement on January 20.

In the newly created position, Li Sun (pictured) will be in charge of embedding AIA’s ESG goals across: health and wellness, green operations, sustainable investment, people and culture, and governance. She will work with functions locally to develop and oversee AIA Singapore’s ESG policies, and to ensure compliance with group regional policies, the announcement said.

Starting this month and based in Singapore Li Sun is reporting to Wong Sze Keed, chief executive of AIA Singapore.

Li Sun has 10 years of experience in corporate sustainability and is a certified sustainability practitioner. Previously, Li Sun worked at UOB, also in Singapore, and held the position of head of corporate sustainability and operated as secretariat for the UOB Group’s sustainability committee, the statement said.

“[Li Sun’s] arrival will drive momentum in expanding AIA Singapore’s ESG credentials that will take our industry leadership to new heights and deliver meaningful outcomes for all,” said Wong in the announcement.

AIA has recently been doubling down on its ESG commitments over the last 12 months. The group previously announced that around US$10 billion of investments in coal mining and coal-fired businesses have been sold off, and that it won’t make new investments in businesses that utilise coal mining or produce electricity from coal.

The Hong Kong-headquartered pan-Asia group has also said that it is aiming to accomplish net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and has been setting up a company climate and net-zero steering committee according to a December company announcement.

The (re)insurance market has a vital role in ensuring that industries around the world can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions but has plenty of work to carry out.
