QBE, Canopius, Aon, Sompo: 12 APAC insurance people moves of the week

InsuranceAsia News wraps up the people moves from the insurance industry in Asia this week.
1. QBE names new Australia Pacific CEO, makes appointments in Australia and Singapore
QBE Insurance has appointed Jonathan Groves as its new CEO for the Australia Pacific region, replacing Sue Houghton, effective from November 1, subject to regulatory approval.
Groves, who has more than 30 years’ experience across the insurance industry, will be based in Sydney and will report to Andrew Horton, CEO of QBE Insurance. He will also join QBE’s group executive committee.
James Butchart has been appointed as the firm’s national portfolio specialist for marine and aviation for Australia.
Sydney-based Butchart was previously head of marine for Zurich Australia, spending over 14 years with the firm.
QBE Asia has hired Marsh’s Shahrezal Wan as Singapore country lead for motor and corporate underwriting solutions.
Singapore-based Wan was previously a vice-president for placement at Marsh, a role he held for about two years, having joined in October 2024 as a placement manager.

2. Canopius bolsters APAC leadership team with senior claims, underwriting appointments
Specialty and P&C (re)insurer Canopius has strengthened its underwriting and claims capabilities with the appointments of Richard Adamczyk as senior claims manager for Australia and New Zealand, Louise Wai as head of property, direct and facultative, for APAC, and Jack Hullah as head of credit and political risk for APAC.
Melbourne-based Adamczyk, who will join Canopius on September 28, was most recently head of claims at the Legal Practitioners’ Liability Committee, which insures legal practitioners of Victoria, and also has spent 15 years with AIG earlier in his career.
Singapore-based Wai, meanwhile, will join Canopius on November 1 from Helvetia Swiss Insurance, where she last served as underwriting manager for engineering and property solutions for Asia.
Also based in Singapore, Hullah will join Canopius on November 10 from Axa XL, where he most recently served as regional product lead for Asia credit and political risk.

3. Aon promotes APAC chief commercial officer to global role
Aon has appointed Jane Drummond as global chief commercial officer, effective from January 1.
Based in Chicago, Drummond will report to Andy Marcell, deputy CEO and senior executive vice-president for risk capital and human capital. She will also join Aon’s executive committee.

4. Sompo names APAC construction underwriting head
Sompo has appointed Joe Wee as its head of construction underwriting for APAC.
In the newly expanded role, Wee will lead underwriting performance and profit and loss management across Sompo’s multi-country construction portfolio, while setting underwriting standards, driving market engagement, and partnering with executive leadership to shape the firm’s long-term strategy in one of APAC’s most dynamic and fast-growing markets.

5. Chubb elevates senior marine underwriter to head of marine, specialty for Hong Kong
Chubb has promoted Lulu Tsai as head of marine and specialty for Hong Kong.
Tsai has nearly two decades of experience, with expertise across cargo, freight forwarders’ liability, hull, and fine art and specie.

6. AIG appoints regional head of trade credit for APAC
AIG has appointed Daina Muceniece as regional head of trade credit for APAC.
Muceniece has relocated to Singapore for the new role, having previously been based in London, where she was EMEA and UK multinational lead, specialising in trade credit, for AIG.

7. Aviso Specialty appoints head of corporate 
Australian broker Aviso Specialty has tapped Thomas Delaney as its head of corporate, based in Melbourne.
Delaney was most recently the managing director and head of commercial at Marsh New Zealand, leading the commercial and affinity business. He had been at Marsh for 10 years across Australia and New Zealand.

8. Lockton taps regional credit director for Asia, names Pacific head of analytics
Lockton has announced the appointment of Alex Bursak as its regional director of credit for Asia.
Based in Singapore, Bursak will work closely with Lockton’s regional and global teams to further develop the firm’s credit capabilities, strengthen relationships with insurers and lenders, and help clients address the evolving challenges and opportunities across the region.
Lockton has tapped Arthur Wong as its head of analytics for the Pacific region.
Before joining this month, Sydney-based Wong worked at Marsh for almost 11 years, including more than five years as head of analytics for specialty.

9. Chubb leader joins Delta Insurance Australia as a financial lines underwriting manager
Darren Cook has joined Delta Insurance Australia as a financial lines underwriting manager.
Cook joins the underwriting team led by Jane Mason after ending an almost 14-year spell with Chubb and was most recently domain lead for digital partnerships.

10. Munich Re Specialty hires property D&F underwriter
Munich Re Specialty – Global Markets, Syndicate Asia has appointed Johnny Ng as an underwriter for direct and facultative property in its Singapore office.
He has more than a decade of experience in the insurance industry, spanning underwriting and broking roles across property, casualty, political violence and terrorism insurance.

11. BHSI underwriter makes ‘bittersweet’ switch to Hannover Re 
Hannover Re has appointed Louise Austin as a senior underwriter for facultative casualty in Australia.
Sydney-based Austin joins from Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI), where she had been a senior commercial underwriter since September 2024.

12. Vietnamese reinsurer AlphaRe appoints facultative manager for non-marine lines
Vietnamese reinsurer AlphaRe has appointed Hieu Pham as its facultative manager for non-marine lines, based in Hanoi.
Pham has over a decade of (re)insurance experience and was most recently an associate reinsurance broker at Kay International AMEA in Singapore for over two years.

Malaysian insurtech PolicyStreet has appointed Firdaus Kasman as its new chief underwriting officer. Kuala Lumpur-based Kasman joins having spent the last eight and a half years at Hannover Re, most recently as team lead for the P&C South Korean treaty business and the affinity business for Asean, South Asia, South Korea, and Japan.
Scor has added Clint Darling as a construction underwriter in Australia, according to a LinkedIn update. Sydney-based Darling has over 15 years of experience with insurance brokers.
