Deep dive into Australia’s cyclone reinsurance pool
Established in July 2022, Australia’s cyclone pool covers cyclone and cyclone-related flood damage to insured residential, strata, and small business properties.
The pool has reached a total net incurred value of approximately AU$1.53 billion (US$1.07 billion) since its inception from more than 129,000 claims by the end of March.
Tropical Cyclone Alfred accounts for the majority of the activity, with over 115,000 claims and a net incurred value of AU$1.3 billion.
The pool has been credited with moderating rises in insurance premiums for households and small businesses facing a medium to high risk of cyclones, but critics argue it remains unfair because southern regions receive coverage without contributing.
