Chinese insurers embrace AI

China’s healthcare sector has turned to artificial intelligence (AI) to scale up operations with hopes that self-learning computer programs can expand customer bases by intuitively responding to a rapidly growing market.

Among the insurance companies that are tapping AI is Ping An Insurance, which launched Ping An Good Doctor in 2015.

In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Wang Tao, group chairman of Good Doctor, said they will continue to further invest in AI in 2018 because the technology had sped up the delivery of the company’s health services by eight times.

In 2015, Ping An launched the Good Doctor mobile application to provide free diagnosis of select health problems, and provide a booking suite that helps users in securing appointments with doctors.

Since its launch, the app has captured 180 million registered users, making it the largest online medical service platform in China, according to Wang.
