U Mobile, Sun Life ink insurance deal

U Mobile and insurer Sun Life Malaysia have forged a partnership that seeks to provide telco-assurance to U Mobile’s five million customers.

It would be the first time for any Malaysian telecom firm to offer life insurance to its customers.

Under the partnership’s terms, U Mobile customers who subscribe to the micro-insurance would be able to manage their life insurance coverage entirely using their mobile phone.

The insurance service will be made available to subscribers starting October.

The telco’s chief executive officer, Wong Heang Tuck, explained that the partnership with Sun Life is only one of the many services it will launch this year in an effort to innovate and transform itself into something “more than a telco.”

For Tuck, Sun Life shares U Mobile’s culture of always trying to challenge the prevailing market norms.

Together, he said, they will be able to offer products that are suited to market needs yet financially accessible.
